Lifting Latina Voices Initiative
Do you want to do something now to
improve Latina's lives and health? Do you want to learn how to be
an effective advocate on the local or national level?
If so, then the Lifting Latina
Voices Initiative is for you!
The Lifting Latina Voices Initiative (LLVI)
overall objectives are to empower Latinas through our volunteer projects,
learning experiences and workshops; and to develop a diverse group
of Latinas to become our future leaders, activists and engaged
citizens.
There are many important issues affecting Latinas today. Come learn how some cultural norms, stereotypes, communication modalities and gender inequities continue to silence Latinas and suppress personal and interpersonal health and growth.
The term “sexual and reproductive health” is a hot topic issue in the Latin-American community. The term is loaded with many taboos, stigmas, shame and misinformation. This has resulted in increasing numbers of STD’s and HIV/AIDS within the Latina community. Come learn and be a part of how we are undoing the harm of silence and reversing its affects with Latinas and their families. From providing basic sex education information about STD’s and health, to having deeper discussions ranging from communication, domestic violence and personal power. We are fostering and increasing Latina’s awareness, growth and self empowerment.
We have and continuously create, relevant and dynamic discussions, workshops and leadership and mentoring opportunities in an open and safe environment with the goal being; Latina empowerment, growth and increased sexual and reproductive awareness and health.
We are a powerful voice . . .
- There are 40 million Latinos residing in
the U.S., representing a 58% increase from 1990-2000.
- There are over 18 million Hispanic American/Latina
women in the U.S. and it is estimated that by the year 2050 1
out of every 4 women in the U.S. will be Latina.
- The major trend to move away from major immigrant
states has impacted Georgia greatly- from 1990-2000; Georgia had
the second largest Hispanic growth rate at 233%.
We Have the Right to a Healthy Life!
- Latinas have the highest uninsured rate of
women from any racial/ethnic group.
- Latina women are more likely to feel that
their doctors do not take the time to answer all of their questions
as compared to other groups and are more likely to leave the doctor's
office without understanding all of the information they received.
