Many women are not aware that there is a non-surgical option or an early medical option for an abortion that involves taking a medication called Mifeprex, often commonly called the "Abortion Pill". This option is available at our new Cliff Valley Clinic for women less than 8 weeks pregnant and who live within one hour of our clinic.
FWHC's medical abortion program is the finest available in the metropolitan Atlanta area. As one of the clinical trial sites that helped it gain FDA approval for this medication, FWHC has more than a decade of experience in providing this service.
How
does Mifeprex or the abortion by pill work?
After the counseling and education to ensure its safety and efficacy, as well as a medical evaluation, the woman is provided the Mifeprex pill, which works by blocking progesterone, a naturally occurring hormone necessary for the pregnancy to continue. Then a few days later, she takes Misoprostol, a prostaglandin that causes uterine contractions. Approximately one week after taking the Misoprostol, the woman must return to the clinic for a follow-up visit to make sure the pregnancy has successfully ended.
Mifeprex/Misoprostol abortions are found to be between 95-98% effective. Although only about 1% of women will have an ongoing pregnancy after taking the medications, approximately 2-5% of women will have an incomplete abortion. This will require either a second round of Misoprostol or a surgical abortion, at no additional charge to the client.
