Many women are not aware that there is a non-surgical, medical abortion option for women who are 6-10 weeks pregnant. Commonly called the "abortion pill," this option is available at our Cliff Valley Clinic.
Our medical abortion program is the finest available in Atlanta.
- Cliff Valley Clinic was one of the clinical trial sites that helped Mifeprex (one of the medications involved in abortion by pill) gain FDA approval.
- We have more than a decade of experience providing medication abortions.
This non-surgical abortion option involves taking a medication called Mifeprex, often called the "abortion pill" or by it's clinical trial designation of RU-486. It is available to women who are between 6 and 10 weeks pregnant.
Mifeprex works by blocking progesterone, a naturally occurring hormone necessary for pregnancy to continue. 24 to 48 hours later, at home, the patient will take another medication, Misoprostol, a prostaglandin that causes uterine contractions. Approximately one week after taking the Misoprostol, the patient must return to the clinic for a follow-up visit to make sure the pregnancy has successfully ended.
Mifeprex / Misoprostol abortions are found to be between 95% and 98% effective. Although only about 1% of women will have an ongoing pregnancy after taking the medications, approximately 2%-5% of women will have an incomplete abortion. This will require either a second round of Misoprostol or a surgical abortion. FWHC provides this service at no additional charge to the client.
