What to expect:
This non-surgical abortion option involves taking a medication called Mifeprex, often called the "abortion pill" or by it's clinical trial designation of RU-486. It is available to women who are between 6 and 10 weeks pregnant.
- Clients are required to take Mifeprex under staff supervision at the clinic. Mifeprex works by blocking progesterone, a naturally occurring hormone necessary for pregnancy to continue.
- 24 to 48 hours later, at home, the patient will take another medication, Misoprostol, a prostaglandin that causes uterine contractions.
- Approximately one week after taking the Misoprostol, the patient must return to the clinic for a follow-up visit to make sure the pregnancy has successfully ended.
